How and Why Astrology Works - An Esoteric-religious perspective

By Gilbert Karlis

For individuals of us that have looked into Astrology carefully there's no question that astrology has a lot of reality in it.

The question that naturally arises then is how does Astrology work? How can the positions on the planets at the time of birth probably determine the character of the person?

I consider that the answer to that has two components.

Firstly, there's a certain quantity of direct influence within the nearest planets and in particular the moon.

It is well known that people behave differently around full moon. In mental well being wards usually one will find far more staff being put on around the full moon period to cater for changes in behavior.

The moon affects the tides in the earth so why not humans at the physical level.

However, by far the principal reason that Astrology works is, according to esoteric teachings, due to prior arrangement. That is, the soul apart from choosing the parents, chooses the date and in most cases the time of birth so how the chart "works". In other words the natal chart represents a "blueprint" from the energies and tendencies which are becoming brought in by the incarnating soul.

It is not the case therefore, as most men and women believe, that the geometric pattern in the planets at the time of birth somehow 'cause' the personality traits and experiences that are associated with the chart. It's the soul, from the assist of one's guides, that plans the birth chart for your life about to become lived.

Before each incarnation the characteristics of a soul in terms of habits, traits and tendencies are already known from examining the attitudes and actions of past lives.

Also the straightforward pattern and blueprint in the life about to become lived is also determined in a general sense. Based on this info a date of birth is chosen that best fits the characteristics the soul wishes to project into that specific lifetime.

The time of birth is manipulated and adjusted so that it falls as close as possible for the time that will give essentially the most match among the chart and the intended life pattern. This allows any competent astrologer to discover the main characteristics, goals and lessons on the person for whom there are generating the reading.

This method also creates sense in regard towards the predictive aspects of astrology typically denoted by transits and progressions.

It would be hard to explain these on the basis of direct vibrational or other influence from the planets. Even if we assume that this energetic influence could result in changes in a person's psychology corresponding to a certain transit, it's tough to see how it could too influence all of the external reasons that would need to go appropriate for your prediction to work.

The esoteric/spiritual explanation creates much more sense, which is that crucial events are arranged from more than by mutual agreement at the soul level ahead of birth.

In other words, the planets do not trigger the events but rather the events are timed to coincide with meaningful planetary aspects that come in transits or progressions.

This also helps to explain the observation that not all transits will cause the events suggested by the planetary aspects appearing in it. Sometimes absolutely nothing happens.

If a essential event is meant to happen it'll generally coincide with an appropriate transit but there do not usually be an crucial event accompanying a powerful transit or progression. This is consistent in the thought how the chart is often a tool for self awareness and not a determinant of destiny.
