Vedic Astrology - Empowering the Goddess Inside

By Ganesh Kevin

From the Vedic tradition the Gods and Goddesses all represent different aspects of the one stream of consciousness. Every God or Goddess represents different aspects or attributes of our genuine nature or Self. In devotional practices for instance Bhakti Yoga, it may appear how the devotee is worshiping an external Goddess or image. In absolute truth, there's no separation in between the divine attributes from the Goddess that we worship and our real nature. On the human level, though, any with the attributes on the Goddess that we have disowned might be projected onto others (whether God, Goddess or human!)

For most folks it is a lot easier to "own" the softer attributes in the Goddess; unconditional love, compassion, acceptance, grace, nurturance and divine protection. These qualities are demonstrated from the Vedic tradition via Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom, Lakshmi, the Goddess of Abundance, and Parvati, the Divine Mother herself. For Buddhist practitioners, the Goddesses Tara and Kuan Yin are often worshiped to bring out these exact same attributes.

In Vedic Astrology, attunement towards the "softer" side with the Goddess is witnessed from the chart primarily from aspects in between the Moon/Neptune and Venus/Neptune. As I stated in my last article, Venus/Neptune aspects inside a chart indicate that the person is learning to be an agent or vessel of unconditional love, and Moon/ Neptune aspects indicate a longing for oneness and unity. The challenge with these aspects is that they are often experienced in their lower manifestation, in particular in relationships. This could include difficulties of co-dependence, unhealthy merging, lack of boundaries and "other" centeredness at the expense of the Self.

In order to empower the fullness of the Goddess in all her attributes it is necessary to have to know the fierce aspect of the Goddess as well, namely Kali or Durga. Kali and Durga, or Chinnamasta and Bhairavi inside the Buddhist traditions, represent the power with the Goddess to destroy illusion. To be able to manifest the fierce energies in the Goddess requires a willingness to speak the fact without distortion. 1 of my teachers is fond of saying that "the reality will set you free, but first, it will piss you off!" The challenge with manifesting the fierce aspects on the Goddess is that it takes skill and clarity to deliver the simple fact without having wounding others. This really is particularly real if one's reality has been suppressed.

When one's reality has been suppressed, it's almost guaranteed that as soon as it comes out it's going to be distorted by the emotions. Once, as soon as I was working with a client who had a short temper and would often "blow men and women away" with his truth, I received a divine equation that I think is worth sharing to illustrate the point. The equation is D=T-W+C! The translation is Dogmatism = Truth - Wisdom and Compassion! To be able to deliver ones truth it takes a skillful blend of wisdom and compassion. In other words, truth, delivered with wisdom and compassion may possibly indeed "piss other's off" at first but it's going to eventually be received because there is no-thing to defend against.

In Vedic Astrology, we see Kali during the chart particularly via aspects among Moon, Mercury, or Venus with Pluto. Pluto may be the planet that represents the destruction of illusion and brings for the surface anything that may be hidden or illusory. Moon/Pluto aspects indicate the "truth-teller" or "whistle-blower" who includes a strong, instinctive "B.S." detector that knows the reality even if others are in denial. Mercury/Pluto aspects reveal an incisive mind that desires to cut away illusion so healing can begin. And lastly, Venus/Pluto aspects speak of powerful convictions and passion to your reality even if it is not "pretty."

Ultimately, it is from the acceptance of our fierceness (Pluto) with our compassion (Neptune) that the fullness in the Goddess is integrated in our lives. As we accept the power of the Goddess in her fierce form and clear the distortions of suppressed emotions, we can then skillfully deliver the simple fact with wisdom, love and compassion. Integrating the fullness in the Goddess in her compassionate and fierce types also allows us to integrate a brand new model of empowerment that doesn't require sacrifice of the truth. This means that we can transcend the old stereotypes of "be nice or do not say a thing at all" and arrive into a brand new integration of truth and compassion in all of our communications.
