A Perfunctory Glance At The Traditional Asian Pregnancy Calander

By James Chung

Improvements in technology has made it easy for a pregnant woman to find out the sex of the unborn child, through the Ultra sound technology. With the eagerness to know the sex of the unborn, couples in China developed a mechanism that enabled them with such predictions.

Known as the Chinese pregnancy calendar this was a method invented by a Chinese scientist with the goal to discover the sex of the baby long before its birth. The scientist utilized his knowledge of the lunar phases of the moon and drew some cross connections between the mother's age and the cycles of the moon to come up with the idea of a calendar that could predict the sex of the unborn infant.

With the use of the calendar, the couple would sate their curiosity and anticipation about the sex of the unborn child, so they could properly plan their lives accordingly, even before conception. This made it an issue of uttermost seriousness to the people then.

Life in China back in the day dictated that boys work in the field because of their reliance on agriculture. In fact, families yearned to get boys than girls, this left the girls to wait until marriage in the confines of their homes.

In later years the Chinese government passed a policy that restricted each family to have only one child. This was a desperate effort by the government to regulate the massive population growth that was occurring and using up the country's resources.

The Chinese government, made the pregnancy calendar so popular so that couples would get some light into what the gender of the baby could be.

Invented around seven centuries ago and on exhibition in the Institute of Science in Beijing the Chinese pregnancy calendar is really thought to have been developed some seventy centuries ago. A Chinese scientist with mastery over lunar sciences is acclaimed with inventing this odd and mystifying calendar.

In the realm of modern science few people put their faith in the Chinese pregnancy calendar with respect to its accuracy. For the resident population however faith in the Chinese pregnancy calendar and its accuracy is something that has been handed down the generations. They honestly believe it to be able to generate accurate predictions which only sometimes are wrong.

Using the month in which the woman first became pregnant as its base the Chinese pregnancy calendar draws a parallel connection with the mother's age to determine the sex of the baby. Unwarranted by modern science the Chinese pregnancy calendar is nothing more than a unique and interesting aspect of the Chinese culture.
