If you haven't heard of them yet, you surely will before the year gets here. Those 2012 doomsday prophecies that many people swear are going to happen. It stems from the Mayan times and their claims that on or near December 21, 2012 the world will end, or something will happen to change the world dramatically.
Well first off, it's going to depend on who you ask and what answer you will receive. Many people have bought into this claim. However, many scholars will firmly state that nothing was indicated in the Mayan history about this specific date.
Of course with a theory that is present, you know that the media will latch onto it and look into it as much as possible. Back in 2006 the History Channel would begin to air the ideas behind the 2012 doomsday prophecy. Unfortunately it was a bit sensationalized and many other programs stemmed from the show.
But it was a huge hit, and the idea took off with many other channels running their own programs. So how will the world end? Well there are many different ideas; you've seen movies that even show some. You know those huge killer storms, or volcanoes. Even the idea that the magnetic poles may switch positions on that day.
But with so much of the Mayan history never really being fully understood, you just can't ever really know what the true case is. The best idea is to go on and live your life fully each and every day, no matter what may happen in 2012.
It is interesting that those people who make up present day Mayan society really hold nothing in significance to the year 2012. They don't really use the long count calendar anymore either. Perhaps it was something that was even created or thought up by someone who discovered part of the Mayan past.
So in closing, is the prophecy real? Well just think back to the start of the millennium, and how the computers were all supposed to stop working? Right, no problems whatsoever!
